Pietre Travertine American Tile was founded in 1964 by Clarence Dowdy, a long-time tile contractor who envisioned selling tile in addition to installing it.

Mr. Dowdy opened his first store in Fort Worth, Texas, and continued to grow his distribution to other Texas cities including Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, and Houston.

In 1995 American Tile was purchased by Acme Brick, headquartered in Fort Worth, coincidentally the home of the first American Tile store. This acquisition not only allowed American Tile to continue distributing tile, but also provided Acme Brick locations with the same product mix to sell tile with their other manufactured and purchased products, thus expanding the territorial reach of American Tile products.

By 2000, Acme Brick became a member of the Berkshire Hathaway family, led by Warren Buffett. Between American Tile (est. 1964) and Acme Brick (est. 1891), we have a long history within the building-materials industry.
